a taste of "gold"
two months ago, gigi volunteered me to play volleyball when she learned that i used to be a volleyball player. many years ago, volleyball was the love of my life. it was during my elementary years when i learned the game. in high school, i joined the varsity team during my junior and senior years. i was lucky to be chosen to go thru a series of training for the Palarong Maynila. my mother used to curse volleyball because i was falling short of my academic requirements due to the number of hours i put on training. in college, i was able to play volleyball during the intramurals called Bakbakan til my sophomore year.more than 10 years have passed since i last held on a volleyball. two months ago, thru gigi, i decided to join the game here in the office. we first started with the stretchings (which i enjoyed the most), jogging around the court, then the drills, spike, toss, service. it was like deja vu of my younger years when i held on to the volleyball like a kid holding on to a precious toy/candy.
during the game, i had to struggle, had to learn to hit the ball properly, serve properly. i attempted to spike but i had the wrong timing with the jump (hay, i am used to smashing a shuttlecock not jump and spike a volleyball).it was painful hitting the ball (hello, 10 years!) that's why when i went home, i was in black and blue. i decided to come back the following week and continued to play, and last saturday, i joined the Intercolor Tournament here in ADB.
There were four teams: yellow, orange, blue and green. ( i belonged to the green team). The elimination round was race to 30 for only 1 set (teams exchanged courts when any of the team reached 15). We only lost to orange who had a varsity player with them (Sue, yung petition online, hehehe!) during the elimination by 3 points! (sayang). however, we defeated the other two teams making us eligible for the championship.
the championship round was played with 2 sets, race to 15. we were all nervous, because orange had the psychological edge over us since they were undefeated entering the finals. (not to mention the fact that they had a varsity player with them) but with the team effort and hard work of each member, we tasted gold! we won the championship! galing mo talaga anna banana at gorgy porgy ;0) so to all my greenmates, Anna, Em, Yllah, Aiko Cris, Tintin, Harry and my Kuya George... CONGRATS!!!
the green team
by the way, just a sidelight during the tournament. harry took pictures of the girls as we candidly pose for him. thanks harry for this pic ;0)
